However with social distancing as the main concern, the coronavirus pandemic has put that action on hold. To bridge the gap, the volunteers are preparing boxes of groceries and basic necessities to drop off at people’s homes. COVID-19 is Nature telling humankind to mend its ways, says Amma on 67th Birthday September 28, 2020 Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the 67th birthday of Amma was celebrated on September 27th exclusively as a day of global prayers for world peace. Ashram residents and devotees around the world dedicated the day to meditation, chanting of prayers and worship. During a webcast, Amma said there is no need for guilt or fault-finding for the current state of the world. Instead, humanity should engage in noble action with intense alertness and courage. Amrita University awarded second UNESCO Chair September 9, 2020 Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham has been awarded a UNESCO Chair for Experiential Learning for Sustainable Innovation & Development. The Chair supports the university’s mandate to strengthen sustainable development in villages across India. The curriculum is based upon the concept that students spend time with villagers to witness the problems they face. Together, the students and local people seek solutions that will best suit the villagers’ needs. Aid for 20,000 blind and visually impaired people in Kenya August 27, 2020 AYUDH Kenya has partnered with Safaricom to distribute white canes to 20,000 blind and visually impaired people in Kenya. The project is worth more than $250,000. Safaricom is a leading communications company in Africa that works in partnership with communities to positively transform people’s lives. The endeavor is a milestone for the White C(r)ane Project, which AYUDH started in Kenya in 2014. There are also a huge number of volunteers active at every level of the organization - the vast majority of all our efforts are carried out by volunteers. This combined with an ethic of personal renunciation demonstrated by Amma and filtered down to every level of the organization ensures that the funds raised directly reach the beneficiaries of our projects, instead of being dissipated in administrative overhead. DOING MORE WITH LESS Studies show that when governments and some organizations allocate money for relief projects, much of it is dissipated in wages. Amma points out: “It's like pouring oil from one glass to another down a line — in the end, you don't have any oil left; it is all stuck to the inside of the glasses. This way, 1,000 dollars become 100 dollars by the time it reaches the people. Whereas if we get 10 dollars, we add our effort to it and the money multiplies.” – Mata Amritanandamayi Amma is not blaming the government; of course, government employees need to make a living. But our army of volunteers allows us to do more with less. "MY CHILDREN ARE MY STRENGTH" We don't use contractors. All the materials-like bricks, windows, doors, tables, chairs, beds - are made in-house. The electrical, plumbing and structure is all done by volunteers. But Amma places the credit for her success squarely on the shoulders of her admirers around the world. “It is my children who have made all this possible.
